Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (*1943 in Tanta, Egypt) studied at the University of Cairo, where was awarded his BA in Arabic studies (1972), and later his MA (1977) and PhD (1981) in Islamic Studies, with works concerning the interpretation of the Qur'an. He worked as Lecturer, since 1982 as Assistent Professor and from 1987 as Associate Professor in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Cairo. In 1995, he was promoted to the rank of Professor, but after Islamic controversies about his academic work led to a court decision of apostasy, he left Egypt for the Netherlands. He now teaches at the University of Leiden.

Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im (*1946 in Sudan) is Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, USA. He holds an LL.B. (Honors), University of Khartoum, Sudan, 1970; LL.B. (Honors) and Diploma in Criminology, University of Cambridge, England; and Ph.D. in Law, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1976. In addition to teaching Law at the University of Khartoum (until 1985), and holding several visiting appointments at North American and European Universities, An-Na'im served as Executive Director of Human Rights Watch/Africa 1993-95. At Emory University he teaches courses in criminal law, human rights, and Islamic law and politics.

Joseph Chan was born in Hong Kong. After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he went abroad to study Western political philosophy at the London School of Economics and Political Science and at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his M.Sc. and D.Phil. respectively. He is Associate Professor of Political Theory at the Department of Politics and Public Administration, The University of Hong Kong. He teaches courses on liberalism, distributive justice, democracy, and the East Asian challenge to liberal democracy and human rights. His recent research and writings focus on Confucian political philosophy, human rights, and perfectionism. He has published articles in journals such as Philosophy and Public Affairs, Ethics, Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Philosophy East and West, History of Political Thought, and the Journal of Democracy.

Sungtaek Cho (*1957 in Pusan, Korea) is Assistant Professor for Buddhism and East Asian Religions at the Department of Comparative Studies, State University of New York at Stony Brook. He obtained his PhD in Buddhist Studies from University of California, Berkeley (1995). His general area of scholarship is comparative studies of Buddhism in India, Tibet, China, Japan, and Korea, whereby his field of specialization and principal area of scholarly publication is Buddhist popular and scholarly literature in Korea and China.

Dilek Çinar (*1961 in Izmit/Türkei) ist externes Forschungsmitglied des Europäischen Zentrums für Wohlfahrtspolitik und Sozialforschung in Wien, wo sie im Programm "Dialogues in Social Theory and Policy-Making / Creating a European Social Space" mitarbeitet. Sie studierte Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien und absolvierte eine Postgraduierten-Ausbildung in Politikwissenschaft am Institut für Höhere Studien (IHS) in Wien, wo sie von 1991 bis 1995 auch als Forschungsassistentin arbeitete. 1999 promovierte sie in Soziologie an der Universität Wien. Von 1996 bis 2000 war sie Forschungsstipendiatin am Europäischen Zentrum für Wohlfahrtspolitik und Sozialforschung.

Enrique Dussel (*1934 en La Paz/Mendoza, Argentina) es profesor emérito de filosofía de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) y de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), ambas en la Ciudad de México. Es doctor de filosofía por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1959) y de historia por la Universidad Sorbona de Paris (1967), doctor honoris causa por las Universidades de Friburgo (Suiza) y La Paz (Bolivia). Es uno de los fundadores del movimiento de la Filosofía de la Liberación y coordinador de la Asociación de Filosofía y Liberación (AFYL). En 1976, después de haber expulsado de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (Mendoza) en 1975, tuvo que irse al exilio mexicano. Fue profesor invitado en la Universidad de Frankfurt, en la Universidad de Notre Dame, en Loyola University (Chicago), Vanderbilt University, California State University (Los Angeles), Duke University, Universidad de Viena, Harvard University, etc.

Eduardo Galeano (*1940 en Montevideo) es escritor y periodista. En sus inicios fue redactor jefe de la revista Marcha y director del diario Época. Junto a su obra periodística empieza a aparecer su obra narrativa que prolonga su visión de América Latina. En 1973 Galeano tuvo que exiliarse a Argentina en donde funda y dirige una revista literaria titulada Crisis. En 1975 se instala en España. A principios de 1985, regresó a Uruguay, al cabo de un exilio de doce años. Es autor de varios libros, traducidos a más de veinte lenguas y de una profusa obra periodística.

Miguel Gamboa (*1947 en Cali, Colombia) es doctor en ciencias políticas y lector sobre cultura latinoamericana en la Universidad de Graz, Austria. En los años 70 y comienzos de los 80 fue asesor de la organización campesina colombianana ANUC, aparte se dedicó a actividades periodísticas y de oposición. Finales de 1983 tuvo que salir al exilio europeo. Fines de los 80 y comienzos de los 90 trabajó en programas austriacos de educación de adultos y desarrollo rural en Nicaragua. Estudió ciencias políticas en la Universidad de Viena.

Soraj Hongladarom (*1962 in Bangkok) is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. After graduating in English at Chulalongkorn University (1983), he went to the US to study philosophy at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he obtained his MA (1986) and PhD (1991). His research interests include epistemology, philosophy of language, Buddhism, modern Western philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of culture, as well as problems arising from the relationship between philosophy and literature. His major concern at the moment is on the problems arising from the interplay between modern science and Thai culture.

Safro Kwame is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He was born and raised in Ghana and educated at the Universities of Ghana and Cincinnati. His areas of specialization are Metaphysics and Moral & Political Philosophy; his current areas of research include African philosophy and the philosophy of computers. Mauricio Langon (*1943 en Montevideo), profesor jubilado, es presidente de la Asociación Filosófica del Uruguay. Fue profesor de didáctica de la filosofía en el Instituto de Profesores "Artigas", profesor de historia de las ideas y de ciencia política en la Universidad de la República en Montevideo e inspector de filosofía de educación secundaria en Uruguay. Realiza investigaciones sobre el pensamiento de Rodolfo Kusch, sobre el pensamiento mbya y sobre los filósofos españoles contemporáneos.

Gustavo Leyva (nacido en México, D.F.) es profesor e investigador de filosofía y coordinador general del Posgrado de Humanidades de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) – Unidad Iztapalapa. Actualmente coordina además el Programa Filosofía Práctica: Tradición y Crítica que es realizado en el marco de las actividades del Posgrado en Filosofía Política de la UAM-Iztapalapa. Es doctor en filosofía por la Universidad de Tubinga (1997) y cuenta además con una maestría en romanística y filosofía por dicha universidad. Realizó sus estudios de licenciatura en filosofía en la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana – Unidad Iztapalapa (1987) y de maestría en filosofía en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1991).

Ulrich Lölke (*1963 in Stadthagen, Niedersachsen) ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Zentralen Einrichtung für Wissenschaftstheorie und Wissenschaftsethik der Universität Hannover und Lehrbeauftragter am Fachbereich Kulturwissenschaft der Universität Lüneburg. Er studierte Philosophie, Kunstgeschichte und Theologie in Berlin, Frankfurt/M. und Hamburg, Abschluß mit einer Arbeit zum Arbeitsbegriff bei Karl Marx und Martin Heidegger. Es folgten ein Forschungsaufenthalt an der University of Ghana in Legon bei Kwame Gyekye und die Promotion an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf mit einer Arbeit über die philosophischen Diskurse im postkolonialen Afrika.

Gregor Paul (*1947 in Magdeburg) ist seit 1993 Professor für Philosophie an der Universität Karlsruhe. 1976 promovierte er in Philosophie, 1985 folgte die Habilitation. Vor allem in den 80er Jahren erfolgten mehrjährige Aufenthalte zu DAAD-Lektoraten, Associate-Professuren und Gast-Professuren in Japan und China. Seit 1998 ist er Präsident der Deutschen China-Gesellschaft, 1999 bis 2000 war er Gründungsrektor und Leiter der Akademie für europäisch-asiatische Wirtschaft und Kultur in Achern. Seine Interessensschwerpunkte liegen in folgenden Gebieten: Philosophie der Logik, Erkenntnis- und Wissenschaftstheorie einschließlich der Methodologie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, Philosophische Ästhetik, Philosophie der Menschenrechte sowie Komparative Philosophie (unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der traditionellen Philosophie im chinesischen und japanischen Kulturraum).

Gail Presbey (*1959 in Detroit) is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at University of Detroit Mercy. She obtained her PhD in Philosophy from Fordham University, New York. During 1998-2000 she was Fulbright Senior Scholar at University of Nairobi. She did interviews and research at University of Ghana-Legon during the summer of 1996. Mogobe B. Ramose obtained his PhD at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 1983. He stayed there as a Research Fellow between 1983-1986. From 1986-1990 he worked as a Senior Jacobsen Research Fellow at the University of Zimbabwe, before he went back to Leuven being a Research Fellow at the Center for Research into the Foundations of Law at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven from 1991-1993. From 1993-1996 he was Lecturer in the Philosophy of Law, Katholieke Universiteit Brabant, Tilburg, The Netherlands. Professor of Philosophy at the University of Venda from 1997-1998. Mogobe Ramose is now Professor of Philosphy at the University of South Africa, Pretoria. His area of reasearch is Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations.

Amartya Sen (*1933 in Santiniketan, India) is Professor of Economics and Master of Trinity College, University of Cambridge, and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. Educated in Economics and Philosophy at Presidency College, Calcutta (B.A. 1953) and Trinity College (B.A. 1955, H.A. 1959, PhD 1959), where he stayed as Fellow until 1963, he teached Economics at Jadavpur University, Calcutta, (1956-58), Delhi School of Economics (1963-71), London School of Economics (1971-77), Oxford University (1977-88) and, on a visiting basis, at several other universities in the U.S. His research in the field of welfare and development economics focus on poverty, famine, and the distribution of wealth in a society. By combining tools from economics and philosophy, he restored an ethical dimension to the discussion of vital economic problems. His contributions range from axiomatic theory of social choice, over definitions of welfare and poverty indexes, to empirical studies of famine. In 1998, he has been chosen for the Nobel Prize in Economics for his contributions to welfare economics.

Niels Weidtmann (*1967 in Tübingen) studierte Philosophie, Politik und Biologie an der Universität Würzburg und der Duke University in Durham/NC, USA. Promotion in Philosophie 1999 bei Heinrich Rombach an der Universität Würzburg mit einer Arbeit über den Weltcharakter von Kulturen. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen in der Strukturphänomenologie, der interkulturellen Philosophie und der Afrikanischen Philosophie. Derzeit ist er als wissenschaftlicher Referent bei der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes tätig.
